Dry In The North
Torrential Downpours Elsewhere

Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 27th May 2018
Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

High pressure will continue to dominate across many northern areas of Europe maintaining mainly dry weather, but with thundery showers elsewhere despite some sunshine.

Sunday
During Sunday and High pressure situated over Norway and Sweden will continue to dominate the weather across much of northern Europe, along with more northern areas of the British Isles as well. This means further mainly dry weather with some sunny spells as well and pleasantly warm. However, low pressure will continue to dominate across Iberia and up into France bringing further thundery downpours as the day progresses and these locally severe still as well. Some of these storms may well move northwards into more southern and western areas of the British Isles. Fine weather is forecast across more eastern areas of Europe, including Poland and surrounding countries with the exception of a few heavy afternoon showers. However, much of the Med maintains very warm or hot weather with plenty of sunshine, but with scattered afternoon downpours, these perhaps severe across parts of Greece and Turkey.

Monday
Into Monday and the high pressure will remain slow moving across much of Scandinavia and extending down towards Poland and some other surrounding countries. As a result, much of northern Europe will remain dry and settled with some warm spells of sunshine, these conditions continuing to extend westwards towards northern areas of the UK too. However, the remainder of Europe remains more unsettled with further heavy and torrential downpours possible. There remains some focus for these to be most frequent and perhaps severe during the day across Spain, Portugal and France, perhaps drifting northwards into southern areas of England too. Higher pressure may mean fewer showers around Italy, despite still a risk, but the risk of showers is likely to be more extensive across south-eastern areas of Europe, especially Slovakia, Greece and Turkey where storms are likely as the day progresses. Much of Europe very warm if not hot, especially central and southern areas where it will be very humid too.
