Brighter, scattered showers

Tuesday
Showery for western regions in the morning, giving locally frequent rain in hilly areas. A few showers spreading to central & eastern areas, but these well scattered, and many places should escape dry with sunny spells. Cloud thickening from the west. Rain moves quickly across Ireland in the afternoon, reaching western Britain by evening. A westerly breeze, turning south-westerly later. Highs 14 to 18C, warmest in the east.


Tuesday night
Winds will strengthen quickly into the evening as a developing area of low pressure sweeps in from the Atlantic. Reaching gale force around coasts and hills in the west & south. Overnight, inland gusts widely 40mph, but risk locally over 60mph where exposed. Heavy rain spreads east across the country, most prolonged for northern England & southern Scotland. Largely dry far north. Lows 9 to 13C, locally cooler northern Scotland.


Wednesday
Low pressure moves rapidly away east into Scandinavia. A blustery day, but the strongest winds in the morning will ease. Local gales for a time on the Pennines and near eastern coasts. Areas of showery rain spreading from the west, merging to constant rain at times in the north & west. Brighter spells and some sunshine for central, south & easten England. Top temperatures 12 to 14C north & west, 15C Midlands, 17C south-east.


Thursday
A cool north-westerly pattern. Pulses of heavy showery rain spreading southwards, at times merging to constant rain around windward coasts in the north & west. Showers may also band together along North Sea coasts. Local hail and thunder. Snow on highest mountain tops in Scotland. Central & south-west England & Wales may escape driest for longest. Occasional sunshine. Blustery winds and squally gusts. Temperatures just 12 to 16C.
