A small area of low pressure over the south-west brings strong winds to southern Britain, gales around the English Channel - gusts over 50 to 60mph on exposed coasts and headlands. Heavy rain over south-west England spreads north across much of Wales through the day. Many central & eastern areas of Britain will stay dry and bright all day with some sunshine. Showers and blustery winds affect western Scotland. Temperatures 6 to 9C.

Friday night
Rain continues to move north during the evening, turning to snow over the hills in the north & west, perhaps as low as 200m where precipitation remains heavy and prolonged. Patchy rain spreads across central-eastern counties of England. Gusty winds will advance north across the country. Becoming dry across the Midlands and south, but showers may return to the south-west. Risk of icy patches where skies clear. Temperatures 1 to 5C.

Saturday
An uncertain outlook, with a couple of small areas of low pressure influencing the British Isles. A zone of showery rain and hill snow pushes north across Scotland, fading slowly. Another area of rain may well affect the south-east of Britain, locally persistent over many hours. Heavy showers spread into the south-west. Central-northern areas should escape more often dry, with some sun. Blustery winds, but local lulls. Highs 5 to 9C.

Sunday
An area of low pressure is expected to pass to the south of Britain, whilst the remains of previous systems are likely to affect northern regions. Local detail is very uncertain. Areas of showers, perhaps some more persistent rain for some, but there will be a good amount of dry and bright weather also, and some places may escape with a largely dry day. Blustery around southern coasts. Local frost at first in rural areas. Highs 6 to 9C.
