Friday
Drizzle and rain affecting the northwest of Scotland through today, tending to turn more persistent this afternoon. A drier day in other parts of the UK and Ireland. The southwest flow may bring some drizzle to western coasts and hills, but many eastern and southern areas tending to be a little brighter with sunny spells. Fog patches affecting southern areas at first with an early frost too. These lifting to leave conditions dry here with more bright spells and broken cloud. Highs at 9C in northern Scotland, 7C in southern England.


Friday night
Tonight sees an increase in cloud for many areas. There could be further fog patches to the south with a touch of frost in southern and central England. Cloud to the north and an increased breeze keeping the frost at bay here. Rain continues to affect the far northwest of Scotland, most of it light and patchy, staying windy here too. Lows at 1C in southern England, 6C in northern Scotland.


New Year's Eve
On New Year's Eve a ridge of high pressure will be holding onto the southern half of the UK and Ireland. A front in northwest Scotland will be bringing rain here, some of it heavy in the west. Breezy as well with the rain slipping into northwest Ireland by the evening. Staying dry for England, Wales and much of southern Scotland with any fog across southern England clearing, A few bright spells developing. Colder weather arrives in northern Scotland towards evening turning to rain to snow over the hills here. The rain then slips south to bring wet New Year's celebrations to central and southern Scotland, northern and western Ireland and the far northwest of England. Highs at 7 to 10C.


New Year's Day
A cold front passes south on New Year's Day introducing much colder air from the north. Showers affecting much of Scotland with snow down to low levels here. A wet start to 2017 across northern England and much of Ireland as well as Wales, the Midlands and southwest England. Rain turns to snow over high ground as the morning progresses. Dry at first in southern England but the rain arriving here in the afternoon. Highs at 9C in southeast England, just 3C in central and northern Scotland.
